The HBCU Aesthetic

This spring, Ralph Lauren pays homage to the Black aesthetic and fashion styles that were culminated between the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s with their Historical Black College University collection. Exclusively, the collection will highlight Morehouse College and Spelman College, both located in Atlanta, Georgia. The renaissance style collegiate-collection capsule looks to focus on the everyday wear of this vintage moment time with tweed blazers, trousers, plaided skirts, varsity sweaters and knitted ties. Adding to the authenticity of this collection, Lauren highlights Black creatives within the fashion industry by using current students and alumni that are connected to the HBCU community. These pieces were specifically designed by Morehouse and Spelman alums who currently operated at the fashion company. The pledge made to showcase the brilliance of African American designers stands strong on this collaboration between Ralph Lauren and both HBCU’s, but it should not be the last. It’s an opportunity to further widen the pathway for more Black designers and creatives from all realms to showcase their talents on a global platform. The collection will be available starting on March 29 on Ralph Lauren’s website, and it will also be exclusively sold Morehouse and Spelman’s campus bookstores.
